I had a friend who had a very evil little piece similar to that shadow. I was considered too “delicate” to experience it. I’m not a pain slut, but nor am I made of porcelain - I can take a pretty good flogging. I felt a little irked at being called “delicate”… until I saw the mess it made of a masochist in the group. I’m glad my (then) Dom knew what was best for me and didn’t let me punch above my weight.

I think a good Dom(me) should always be aware of their sub’s limits, encourage them where applicable, but always be ready to say no if something is too much. Some people aren’t good at accepting their own limits, and that can be a problem if they’re in a scene (says the switch who hates to the safe words even when she needs them and has sobbed about it every time she’s had to call “red”).
