Thoughts on the Vancouver 2011 riot: I watched the news last night, taking in the stupidity that went on in the Vancouver streets and I felt shame.  Even though my link to Vancouver is tenuous and getting more fragile by the week, I was proud of living in south west BC, near one of the world’s most desirable cities. This morning, as I watch the news some of that shame is being replaced with rational thought.  There are stories of good samaritans surfacing and looking at the photos online I’m thinking that some of the more active rioters weren’t hockey fans after all but a darker element; professional protesters. They are the people who surface at all the G(x) summits, during the olympics and at WTO events. They portray themselves as activists for the poor, denouncers of capitalism, their message is “down with the Man”. They come with their hand out and an entitled attitude, demanding affordable housing in downtown Vancouver and do so while wearing black masks.  The pictures and video from last night showed some of those people.  Who goes to a hockey game with a black balaclava ?  These people should be treated as terrorists. Their weapon is not a pipe bomb but a crowd, they incite, they bait the children who have no self control and wore the Canuck jerseys last night and then use the mayhem as cover for their own agenda.  Don’t be deceived, their motives are not noble. They are common thugs and looters. (end of conservative rant)

It happens.

It happens hundreds of times every day across america, I would think. Do we really need to devote all that news time to this event ? Isn’t there something of more interest going on in the world ?

What is it with this fascination the media has with the lurid. Does no one in the news have sex ? Do they all lead such boring, conventional lives that a story such as this one must be relished ad nauseam ? Do we need to see pictures of the lady and her house on the news ? 

Let’s move on, nothing to see there.

For Anon: It might seem like I get random girls sending me naughty pics and you might think I am a boss, but I’m not. I’ve known *this* girl for a long time, slept in the same bed as her and shared some tough times as well as good ones. Those pics are usually the result of a relationship. I’m telling you this because I’ve seen too many Anons spam a lady’s inbox requesting pics and then get bent and abusive when the lady doesn’t respond well. Boys, get to know a lady, THEN you can ask. *steps off the soapbox*

I am glad I deleted my account a while back and think *you* should too.  Shame those sex-negative, anti feminist, mud slingers.

Delayed gratification:

On April 27, I bought Portal 2. 

Between the download of the game, the updates, the client crashes and the updating of the client itself, I have yet to play the damn game.

Admittedly, my internet is like sucking a McDonald’s milkshake through a 100 km straw, but the steam client usually tells me I’m getting 65-70 kb/s (when it’s running) and I’ve left it on overnight most nights.

WTF, Steam ??  

Think twice before you buy this game; in my opinion, the system isn’t ready for prime time.

Hypocrisy

According to this Reuters article, a “fairly extensive” porn stash was discovered in Bin Laden’s hideout.

Apparently, the dude who denounced the shamelessness of the Great Satan wasn’t as high minded as he wanted us all to think.

Some people suck. There was a yellow husky type dog outside my house this morning. He was dragging the broken chains that seem to be normal for dogs around here. I went out to see if I could remove them and after about 5 minutes  of crouching and talking to him he let me. He had 2 chains around his neck. One was a grocery store grade leash just clipped on itself. When that had broken off, they had added a choker collar and clipped it to a cable, not removing the old one. The original leash was pretty tight. How long had it been on ? Then there was a shoelace that had been knotted on. I didn’t have a knife on me so I wasn’t able to remove that. I think of the kind of life he’s had, neglected and tied up in the yard and feel sad.

Frustration

Today has been the most frustrating day I’ve had in a looong while. I have felt disrespected, dismissed, dehumanized in a way I haven’t felt in over a decade. (Those of you who know where I was a decade ago know how much this means)

So I did what the manly do when the going gets tough. I did some shopping, went off roading and now I’m cooking and getting drunk.

To my employer, the RCMP and every government agency I dealt with today: fuck you.

Tomorrow will be a new day. (and there will be tasty black bean soup)

On a slightly ranty note:  I found a wrapper on the trail. It was for a moose lure so it was likely a discard from a hunter. This, along with the multiple salt licks in the clearing makes me think this is a favourite spot for a moose hunter.

Hunters, of all people should be aware of what traces they leave behind. That includes packing your garbage out. Be aware of your impact on the environment, don’t leave crap behind that will flutter in the wind and spook your game. This would also mean not leaving garbage behind for the next person to find.
